The Perkiomen Trail is a great place to check out if you are in the Philadelphia area, and looking for a nice hiking spot. The trail covers over 19 miles in length. This post reviews the location in Oaks on New Mill Road. You will find a decent sized parking lot there at this particular section of the trail.

When you are visiting Pennsylvania, you will really want to enjoy our amazing parks and nature views. One of the great aspects of the Philadelphia region is that we have beautiful hiking areas, but you will still be close to the city as well. This area truly merges nature and history in a delightful manner.

One of our personal favorite hiking trails to get fresh air and take in some spectacular nature views is of course, the Perkiomen Trail. The trail itself hugs the route of the Perkiomen Creek from Oaks to the Green Lane Borough, and the water flowing from the creek creates some pretty relaxing sounds as you walk on the path. The nickname for this trail is the “Perky” and it utilizes the former rail bed from the Reading Railroad.

When we went for our hike, we really enjoyed that the trail was very distinct and easy to follow. The area that we went on was paved, but there are crushed stone areas too. From our experience hiking in very dense woodsy type regions, this made it more relaxing since there was a clear path to go on. (One time we went on a trail where you really did have to pay attention to the direction that you traveled because the plants basically overgrew it!) For that reason, I would definitely recommend this trail, and it seemed to be a great area for families and people of all ages.

I highly recommend the Perkiomen Trail if you are looking for an enjoyable walk. It meanders through so many historic towns and parks that include Collegeville, Schwenksville, Arcola, Green Lane Park, Central/Lower Perkiomen Valley Parks, and even the John James Audubon Center at Mill Grove.

I highly recommend the book “Hiking Waterfalls In Pennsylvania.” It specifically maps out where you can find waterfalls in each area and region of the state. If you are an outdoor adventurer, you will want to check this out!

For generations, my family has lived in the Philadelphia area, and my writing reflects these influences. This blog explores perspectives on life, encouragement, travel, health, and local living.

  1. I used to love it pre-pandemic. It’s right outside my back door but I no longer use it. It has become overcrowded. The paved Pathways take away from nature and the natural beauty.

  2. The Perkiomen Trail is one of my favorites. I started riding on it years ago with my children. I reconnected with it 4 years ago when I moved within riding distance of the Schuylkill River Trail. My favorite times on the trail are weekdays when it isn’t as crowded. From the Lower Perkiomen Park to Crusher Rd are many idyllic sections of trail, rippling brooks, trickling waterfalls, rock walls, wooden bridges, birds singing at the top of their little birdy lings, turtles, deer, foxes and so much more. Perhaps I’ll pass you “on the left” one of these days! Happy hiking!
