Travel Books I Recommend

The Skogafoss Waterfall Iceland

I truly enjoy writing travel guides for all of you that review various areas and countries to help you find the best spots on your excursions! When my husband and I have plans to make a journey to somewhere new, we like to read books about the regions ahead of time. This really gives us an opportunity to get a sense of the history, nature, and even interesting spots that we can check out. I have put together comprehensive list for all of you with the books that I have read that are really useful in addition to the guides listed on this blog. They are great to really sit down with, and we personally used these books as an accompaniment for traveling. I have read through many books that focus on different regions, and these are truly great resources. Some are more focused on the history of a place, while others highlight the main attractions, while others do a little of both!

If you are traveling to the Pennsylvania region, and are interested in learning about its history, a really amazing resource is the book “Pennsylvania A History of the Commonwealth” by which is edited by Randall M. Miller and William Pencak. It is so informative, and reviews the history of our state, in addition to the geography, architecture, archaeology, art history, and even stories of folklore and folklife that are specific to this area.

I personally recommend this book if you are planning a trip to Pennsylvania, or even if you are just interested in learning about the state in general. If you would like to check it out, click on the link below!

Another great resource that I think will be a great addition to your travels is “Hiking Waterfalls In Pennsylvania.” It specifically maps out where you can find waterfalls in each area and region of the state. For each waterfall, this book provides maps and directions, trail surface and difficulty, the distance it takes to get to the waterfall, canine compatibility, hiking time, the waterfall height and so much more. I like that there are full-color photos as well of the waterfalls that are provided next to the trail information. This spectacular book provides so much information on Pennsylvania’s gorgeous waterfalls, and shows you where you can find them when you are hiking in our state.

New York-

If you are traveling to the New York region, and are interested in hiking or viewing spectacular waterfalls in the area, a book that I would highly recommend and also own myself is “Hiking Waterfalls New York.” This literature reviews a variety of hikes, from the famous Niagara Falls, to even more less known hikes, but spots that you will not want to miss! At the beginning of the book, I really like that the author categorized the trails from her favorites, best waterfalls for fall foliage, best gorge hikes, roadside waterfalls, best historical falls, and even waterfalls that may draw in more crowds versus less crowded waterfalls. There is also a very nice map that lays out where the locations of them are, and that can be an amazing tool when you are planning your trip. I think this is great so that you know how far of a distance you can expect to travel from where you are lodging, and you can really make the most out of your time and itinerary. With each hike and waterfall listed there is a full color photo, trail distance, difficulty, and even information about the actual surface that the trail is made out of in addition to so much more!

This is honestly a very good resource if you are traveling to New York and enjoy hiking, waterfalls, trails, and just being surrounded by nature. I only recommend books or products if I use them myself, and I hope that you will find great value in them as well. If you would like to learn more click on the link below!

My absolute favorite book that I have found about Iceland is appropriately also called “Iceland” and is written by Jenna Gottlieb. This book is so detailed with the landmarks in Iceland, and it reviews the capital of Reykjavik, the Reykjanes Peninsula and the South, the Snaefellsnes Peninsula and the Westfjords, North Iceland, East Iceland and the Eastfjords, the Highlands, and the Ring Road. It also reviews when the best times are to see the Northern Lights, the best wild-life watching spots, the best day hikes, and various weekend getaway spots. When we personally went, we stayed in Reykjavik, and I absolutely love her super detailed guide of the city. She lists the best accommodation spots, how to get around Reykjavik, shopping areas, dining options, nightlife, sights, sports and recreation, and seriously so much more. I appreciate that she not only details the different areas in Iceland, but she really dives into the history too. There are photos in color as well so you can get the sense of what each part of Iceland looks like. There is so much more information in this book that will help you feel more confident on your travels to Iceland, and it is worth the read!

If you are traveling to California and enjoy exploring nature scenery, I highly recommend the book “California Hiking.” This spectacular guide reviews so many hiking areas throughout the entire state and provides details on how easy the paths are to navigate, whether you need a permit, which user groups (if dogs, horses, or biking is allowed), contact information, and directions as well. My favorite part of this book is the “Best Hikes” section that reviews coastal and beach hikes, bird watching areas, desert hikes, regions to see amazing autumn colors, self-guided nature walks, meadow hikes, short backpack trips, and so much more!
