If you are interested in seeing a really beautiful nature area that is a little off the regular path in the Ithaca New York region, you will want to check out Ludlowville Park and its secret waterfall. Perhaps the word “secret” is a little bold of a term, but I would say that it is perhaps not as well known as some of other hiking trails/gorge regions that visitors may frequent.
This particular waterfall, named the Salmon Creek Falls, is located right by the Ludlowville Park (the address for this location is on Mill Street, Lansing New York, 14882) and there is a parking lot that you can park in right by it. If you are staying in Ithaca, it is a little more then a 15 minute drive, and it is north of the city on the east side of the Cayuga Lake.
The park itself is a moderate size, and you will be able to hear the waterfall as you walk through it. I honestly think that this would be a great area to visit and bring a packed lunch along since there is ample seating in the park itself with picnic tables, a gazebo, and even a pavilion. There is a really cute playground too, so if you have a family this would be a great stop for you.
As I walked through the park, the waterfall seemed to get louder, and once I reached it, I was in amazement at its pure magnificence, and the power of the water as well. It was towards the end of the day on our visit, and as the sun danced with the mist to create a rainbow for a couple of seconds, and I was so grateful to be able to catch a small glance of this on my photos. It just very peaceful, and the perfect spot to really take those nature views in.
I highly recommend the Salmon Creek Falls by the Ludlowville Park, and it is such a perfect spot to view a magnificent waterfall. If you are traveling to the New York area, and are interested in hiking or viewing spectacular waterfalls, a book that I would highly recommend and also own myself is “Hiking Waterfalls New York.” This literature reviews a variety of hikes, from the famous Niagara Falls, to even more less known hikes, but spots that you will not want to miss! At the beginning of the book, I really like that the author categorized the trails from her favorites, best waterfalls for fall foliage, best gorge hikes, roadside waterfalls, best historical falls, and even waterfalls that may draw in more crowds versus less crowded waterfalls. There is also a very nice map that lays out where the locations of them are, and that can be an amazing tool when you are planning your trip. This is great so that you know how far of a distance you can expect to travel from where you are lodging, and you can really make the most out of your time and itinerary. With each hike and waterfall listed there is a full color photo, trail distance, difficulty, and even information about the actual surface that the trail is made out of in addition to so much more!
