If you are looking to try some truly delicious, high quality cheeses and ice cream flavors while you are visiting the Finger Lake region of New York, you will want to stop by the Shtayburne Farm. They are located off of Seneca Lake at 2909 Chase Road, Rock Stream, NY 14878. If you are in Watkins Glen, it is only about a ten minute drive following the west side of the lake.

While my husband and I were on our hiking adventures in Watkins Glen, we knew that in between exploring the gorgeous outdoor places, it would be really neat to check out a local farm that had cheese tastings. We discovered all that and more when we visited the Shtayburne Farm and Creamery.

When we arrived at the farm, we were really impressed at how nicely it was decorated for the season. (We traveled up to this area from Philadelphia in the middle of October.) Also, the young lady working there was really friendly and helped us pick out a nice selection of cheese and ice cream for our tasting. They had a great variety of aged cheddars, flavored cheddars, Monterey Jacks, and even a selection of cheddar curds. There was a wonderful list of flavors to choose from with their ice cream options as well. (This was definitely an exciting surprise that you could mix samples of the ice cream in addition to the cheeses with the tasting.)

We ended up sampling the dill cheddar curds, cracked pepper and mushroom curds, chipotle curds, mild aged cheddar, sharp aged cheddar, smoked bacon cheddar, horseradish cheddar, and cranberry Monterey Jack cheese. With the ice cream flavors, we ended up trying the peanut butter explosion, toasted kettle corn, s’mores, and the peach cobbler. We really loved all the delicious cheeses and ice creams, and I even found a new favorite flavor of ice cream with the peach cobbler, it was so good!

If you are interested in supporting a local business in the Finger Lakes, the Shtayburne Farm is a family owned and operated dairy. Generations of their family have been in this profession for years, and in 2010 their family decided to expand and include a cheese processing facility and farm store. In this manner, they can offer high-quality cheeses to their customers directly from the farm. Also, all of their cheeses are processed and packaged by hand in small batches. They do offer a variety of tours where you can even visit with their cows, which is so cool! (Make sure that you check out their website for more information on how to book tours, which I have linked at the bottom of this post.)

If you are planning a trip to the New York area, and are interested in hiking or viewing spectacular waterfalls, a book that I would highly recommend and also own myself is “Hiking Waterfalls New York.” This literature reviews a variety of hikes, from the famous Niagara Falls, to even more less known hikes, but spots that you will not want to miss! At the beginning of the book, I really like that the author categorized the trails from her favorites, best waterfalls for fall foliage, best gorge hikes, roadside waterfalls, best historical falls, and even waterfalls that may draw in more crowds versus less crowded waterfalls. There is also a very nice map that lays out where the locations of them are, and that can be an amazing tool when you are planning your trip. This is great so that you know how far of a distance you can expect to travel from where you are lodging, and you can really make the most out of your time and itinerary. With each hike and waterfall listed there is a full color photo, trail distance, difficulty, and even information about the actual surface that the trail is made out of in addition to so much more!

  1. Ice cream and cheese are an interesting combo, but I guess you get the best of both words with something sweet and salty. I’m such a fan of samples and tastings. And many of those flavours sound delicious! Mmm.

  2. That sounds such a treat. Though may I ask you, What is a cheese curd? I’ve had Lemon Curd but not heard of savory curds, or are they what we in the UK call spreads or cream cheese?

    • Thank you very much! Cheese curds are little chunks of cheese that are not aged yet, and they are basically droppings of cheese from the milk. They have a really mild flavor about the same density of cheese, but a more springy texture. I do love a good cream cheese and spread though too! Dairy products are delicious 🙂

  3. Smoked bacon cheddar and peach cobbler ice cream sound the most appealing to me, though I have a feeling that all the various flavours are excellent. I really like that the farm is family owned and run, and that they make their own high quality dairy produce.
