Glenora Falls

Glenora Falls

One of the most fantastic waterfalls that you will find in the Finger Lakes is the lovely Glenora Falls. This enchanting spot resides within a private property at 74 South Glenora Road in Dundee, New York, and it is right off the Seneca Lake. If you are staying in Watkins Glen, it is less then a ten minute drive to get to this location.

Since the waterfall is on a private property, it is crucial that you do not trespass on to it. Luckily, you will find that you do get a decent vantage point of the Glenora Falls from the road, just use caution if you are taking a photo. We traveled to the Finger Lakes in the middle of October, and it was not too busy when we drove by the location later in the day. This made it very feasible to capture a couple pictures of it.

Although we did not personally use this venue, it certainly does have amazing and delightful nature scenery. The house on the property is very charming as well. Currently, this place hosts various events such as bridal parties, corporate events, and even large family gatherings. I will leave a link to their direct website at the bottom of this post if you want to visit this area, and book an event with them.

The waterfall itself is very impressive, and it stands at about 90 feet (27 meters.) The creek that flows through it is also one of the larger tributaries to the Seneca Lake.

Another interesting fact is that the term Glenora means “Shine of the Glen” in the Scottish language. I believe it is certainly understandable to use this phrase when you do see the elegance of this particular waterfall. Also, historically, there was once a grist mill constructed above the falls, and a saw mill below them. In later years, during the 1900s, the commercial aspects of this place were demolished. The area was then replaced with cottages, and the Glenora House Estate was built in 1900.

If you are planning a trip to the New York area, and are interested in hiking or viewing spectacular waterfalls, a book that I would highly recommend and also own myself is “Hiking Waterfalls New York.” This literature reviews a variety of hikes, from the famous Niagara Falls, to even more less known hikes, but spots that you will not want to miss! At the beginning of the book, I really like that the author categorized the trails from her favorites, best waterfalls for fall foliage, best gorge hikes, roadside waterfalls, best historical falls, and even waterfalls that may draw in more crowds versus less crowded waterfalls. There is also a very nice map that lays out where the locations of them are, and that can be an amazing tool when you are planning your trip. This is great so that you know how far of a distance you can expect to travel from where you are lodging, and you can really make the most out of your time and itinerary. With each hike and waterfall listed there is a full color photo, trail distance, difficulty, and even information about the actual surface that the trail is made out of in addition to so much more!

    • Thank you Lyssy! I just slow down the shutter speed a bit, and hold the camera really really still (a tripod is best when you are doing flowing water if possible.)

  1. You have shared some useful tips and information about how to get there, where to park, and what to expect. I appreciate your honesty and respect for the property owners. Your photos are stunning and make me want to see Glenora Falls for myself someday.
